Thank you for visiting our resource centre for polychlorinated biphenyl testing and research, where you can find many of the PCB tools and information you require.
PCBs, also commonly called biphenyls, are synthetic aromatic compounds containing between one and ten chlorine atoms attached to a biphenyl nucleus—two benzene rings connected by a single covalent bond.
Many of the 209 PCB compounds possess physical characteristics that were useful in a wide range of products from the 1920s through the early 1980s. However, starting in the 1970s, many leading manufacturing countries began banning PCBs. Today, they are classified as Persistent Organic Pollutants under the Stockholm Convention.
Dioxins and furans are common names for two families of toxic chemicals – and Persistent Organic Pollutants – that are chemically similar to PCBs.
As well as carrying out furans and dioxins testing and investigations in the environment, research institutions, businesses and governments need to establish contamination monitoring systems to ensure that safe tolerance levels for furans and dioxins in food and feed are not exceeded. LGC Standards offers a combined 2,000+ reference materials and research chemicals to support testing for dioxins and furans, almost half of them ISO 17034-accredited.
