Food contact materials

The production of Food Contact Materials (FCMs) is rising steadily, due to the advantages they bring to today’s food industry - such as enabling long-term storage and distribution, reducing waste, and generally underpinning the profitability of globalised food chains.

However, the benefits of FCMs come at a heavy cost to the environment, as single-use food packaging strongly contributes to household waste and plastic pollution, and thus threatens the world’s ecosystems. Food Contact Chemical (FCCs) within FCMs - and plastic chemicals in particular - are also well known to migrate from food packaging and into the foods we eat, raising concerns about whole populations ingesting plastic-associated chemicals.

Testing using high-quality FCM reference materials is therefore essential in ensuring that set migration limits are not exceeded for these chemicals, and that product quality is maintained.
